LEAVE THE LEAVES?

If you mow your yard, the big question as fall approaches is – “What do I do with my leaves?” Many homeowners spend hours raking and bagging these crispy brown botanical beauties. How about this: consider putting down the rake and use your mower instead! There are several benefits to mulching your leaves. Here’s a few to consider:

1. SAVES TIME

Mowing your leaves cuts the leaf raking/bagging process in half. Talk about a timesaver! With our busy schedules and other projects to do around the house, free up some of that precious time and let your mower do the work!

2. ENHANCES LAWN HEALTH

In addition to saving you time, mulching your leaves can actually improve the health of your lawn! When they are chopped into tiny pieces and spread evenly on your lawn, the small leaf clippings that do remain are able to go through a rotting process and will return nutrients to your lawn without damaging it. If done correctly, mowing your leaves during the fall season has been proven to promote your lawn turning green a little sooner in the spring as well as help to cut down on crabgrass and broadleaf weeds.

3. HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT

When you choose to mulch your leaves, this will reduce landfill space. Most people use plastic bags when they rake leaves. These bags last last FOREVER, long after the leaves have decomposed. Mulching the leaves not only prevents grass from suffocating under the cover of tons of untouched leaves, but reducing the size of the leaf will make it less likely to clog up sewers and drainage systems.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Before mowing your leaves, you should make sure that they are dry. Wet leaves are much like wet grass and can be more difficult to mulch into smaller pieces. They can also create clogs and more messes around the yard for you to clean up.

Also, consider investing in a Mulch Baffling Kit like this one.  This attachment takes your grass and leaves and cuts them into even smaller clippings before distributing them onto the lawn. (*Will not fit RZ mowers. *Not available for the 72″ deck.)

SAY NO TO THE RAKE THIS FALL

Cut your lawn care time in half this fall by putting down the rake and using your lawn mower to make your lawn look amazing. Not only will your lawn thank you, but you’ll have more time to enjoy the nice, crisp fall season with friends and family!
